Fate is so fake that the words are similar. This is no coincidence because when the word was derived, they were like "Well we already have fake so... um... how about we just change the 'k' for a 't' and nobody will no! (Or care)."
If there was no freewill then there would be no purpose for life. Well I guess living in itself is purpose enough, but it makes an already miserable world more miserable. I hate being miserable (paradox!) so I choose not to believe in fate. Also, who's to decide it? Freewill at least gives people hope; ignorance is bliss. Moreover, fate is in the same ballpark as voodoo and astrology: bull.
Fate also collides with my religion more than freewill does. Believing in fate is saying you believe that your actions are worth nothing and that you are insignificant. One can argue that God decides our destiny, but our actions can change his mind, and according to definition fate is unchangeable. Freewill says that our destinies are a direct result of the here and now. I can take more comfort in that, at least knowing my efforts aren't futile.
So again, fate tells us we are puppets, but freewill says we hold our own strings, and I love the way they feel.
